One of the only things i missed when I first moved to San Diego was a decent music scene. (well, my family too). Now your typical SoCal punk rock lovers might disagree, but this funk loving girl saw a scene that was lacking. I did what I had to do. I adjusted. Going to shows once every few months was a far cry from my usual routine. Though the music left my schedule, it never left my soul. Cheesily. Truly. I longed for a good boogie session and some funk in my face (TWSS). When I saw Soul Rebel and Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk were going to be playing at the Belly Up, I immediately grabbed 2 tickets. That was about 2 weeks ago.
Fast forward to yesterday. After a long day of work followed up by running errands, I had to grab a whole foods dinner to go and met Casey home by 7:30. Doors at 8. Show at 9. Now, from my experience seeing many NOLA bands over the years, they are rarely ever on time. Would that be the same here in SD? Who knows. All I know is that Casey decided to bail and passed out (with my ok of course). Exhausted, I came close to joining him, but instead, rallied into my best looking pj flannel shirt and black comfy pants. I at least want to be cozy while I boogie. I also threw on a scarf and hat….it was dark and cold out. So cold that I had to check the temps. 65 degrees. Really?! Since when did 65 become hat and scarf weather? Anyway, I blasted my heat and drive over to Solana Beach.
Walked in the doors around 9pm to maybe 20 people! Wow. The guy next to me informed me that the people will come. And as Soul Rebel Brass Band began, that they did. People danced in flocks toward the stage. It was awesome. They quickly ended their set within an hour…definitely not your typical NOLA fashion, but I was fine with that since I had to be up early for work. Dumpstaphunk was on by 10:30. Sound was an issue early on but eventually they worked it out and put on some lengthy jam sessions. I lost myself, track of time, and what?!…my hearing! Why did I have to be right in front so close to the speaker? My ears were ringing and as I drove home with the windows down, I recalled the guy I saw with the lime green ear plugs. Note to self for the next show. I liked that color too.
