the athlete in me…

…from the del mar race track to the stinky la jolla cove, I ran my first half marathon this past Sunday.
7:30 am the gun went off.
The sound of thousands of sneakers pounding the pavement, beating through to my core as I watched everyone settle into their race pace pack was pretty inspiring.
Seeing people of ALL shapes and sizes really pulled at my heart strings. Knowing that each person had their own reasons for running this race… in this moment, we all shared the common goal- to cross that finish line waiting for us 13 miles away.

My favorite part of the run, aside from the spectators entertaining us, was coming up the hill out of Del Mar and seeing the ocean and the Torrey hill with hundreds of heads bobbing up it…

…maybe because this is my home beach and there was comfort in that or maybe because it was what everyone expected to be one of the hardest parts of the race with 420’gain. There was a mist coming off the ocean carried by a nice breeze. I grabbed a water at the station and instead of drinking it pretty much dumped the whole thing down my shirt. I do not have running and drinking coordination but I wasn’t going to lose momentum. And I didn’t! Passing people left and right. I couldn’t believe it. Who am I, first time half marathoner, who barely trained, to leave these people in my dust? I was quickly reminded on the downhills as people flew past me that it all equals out somewhere :)

This being my first half, I have nothing to compare it to, but I did enjoy it! I crossed the finish at 2:01 and ran into the arms of my man…waiting for me with my green recovery juice on ice :)

I skipped the free beer when I saw the ‘bud light’ sign and instead we decided on Tap Room for breakfast with the rest of the crew. Beer snobs to the fullest!

Next up…..sprint triathlon in 3 weeks!
