Summer weather at Mammoth

It was 25° above average this past weekend in the High Sierra. How warm is that, exactly? Hmm, how to say this… There’s two ways to arrive at Mammoth. The most common is the late night arrival following a long haul up after work, in which you have a beer and try to relax while unpacking your car, settling into your hotel, and deciding how early to set the alarm. The other, and more optimal way to arrive is before dinner, while it’s still light out, entertaining thoughts of how you have the entire weekend ahead of you.

On Friday, it was warm enough for us to pass on the highly sought after daylight arrival, and instead stop [an hour South] down in Bishop so we could eat dinner outside – sipping some veeno, watching the sun dip, in shorts and t-shirts with a warm breeze at our back. So warm that we couldn’t help but reminisce about sitting around on warm summer nights back in NJ. You know the ones that you got to stay out late on because your parents were still talking to the neighbors? The ones that are so warm it’s tough to fall asleep? It was that warm, in April nonetheless. And damn, it felt amazing. Just sitting – listening to the cars, crickets, and people passing by, you can’t help but slow down. And I don’t remember the last time that we’ve done that.
